Description:
Perennial herbs from a short, creeping rootstock with numerous thick roots. Leaves many, radical, lorate, to 75 x 3.5 cm, apex obtuse. Scape to 100 cm, erect, angled. Umbel terminal, to 20 cm wide, subtended by 2 foliaceous bracts to 5 x 3.5 cm. Flowers up to 50 to the umbel; pedicel to 7 cm, each subtended by a foliaceous bracteole. Perianth petaloid, deep blue to white, gamophyllous, to 4.5 cm wide; tube 2 cm; lobes 3+3, oblanceolate, to 3.5 x 1 cm spreading. Stamens 6, inserted at throat of tube; filaments to 4.5 cm, blue, twisted; anthers introrse, versatile. Ovary superior, oblong, to 1.2 cm, angled and 3 celled with numerous ovules, on axile placentae; style slender, to 3.5 cm, blue. Capsule 3-sided, to 3 x 1.2 cm; seeds numerous, minute.
