Description:
Perennial rhizomatous herb. Root stock horizontal. Leafy stem 1.5-2 m, branching absent. Leaves oblong-lanceolate, tip acuminate, 25-35 x 5-6 cm, upper surface of lamina dark green, lower surface light green, glabrous, lateral veins 10-12 pairs, slightly raised on upper surface; petiolate, petiole 1-1.5 cm, glabrous; ligulate, ligule c. 0.5 cm, membraneous, glabrous. Inflorescence terminal, young spike compact, becoming lax when mature, red, 10-20 cm long, protected by 2-3 small sheaths, 4-5 x 1-1.5 cm, glabrous, tip apiculate, persistent. Bracts obovate, 2-3 x 1.5-2 cm, coriaceous, deep purple, showy, ciliate along the margin. Bulbils present in the axil of bract. Flower 4-5 cm long, white, slightly longer than the bract. Calyx tubular, 2-2.5 cm long, shortly 3-toothed at the tip, pale red, glabrous. Corolla tube c. 3 cm long, white, longer than the calyx tube, glabrous, 3-lobed, lobes oblong, subequal, dorsal lobe 1.2- 1.5 x 0.5-0.7 cm, tip rounded, lateral lobe 1-1.2 x 0.3-0.5 cm. Labellum 1.2-1.5 x 0.7-1 cm, white, thick along median, apex orbicular, base narrowed. Lateral staminodes absent. Anther thecae parallel, connective prolonged into a flat hood with incurved margin. Epigynous glands 2, 2 mm long, free from each other. Ovary tricarpellary, trilocular, glabrous; ovules many on axile placenta; style long, filiform; stigma circular with a ciliate margin, slightly exceeding the anther lobes.
