Description:
Erect armed shrubs; stem erect, tall, smooth; branchlets grooved; spines straight, long; cladodes 4-12-nate, triquetrous, acuminate, .16-.35 inch long. Leaves reduced to minute, distinctly spinous. Flowers white, small or minute, 1-2 together, solitary, clustered or umbelled, not racemed, pedicels jointed above the middle. Perianth petaloid, campanulate, 6-partite. Stamens 6, on the bases of the perianth-segments; filaments free; anthers oblong. Ovary 3-celled, 3-gonous; ovules 2 or more in each cell; style 1, columnar; stigmas 3. Fruit a globose, pulpy berry; seeds 1-6, testa black, brittle; embryo dorsal.
