  Description: Erect thistle; branchlets ribbed, cottony. Leaves alternate, sessile, clasping, lower ones deeply pinnatisect, upper ones sinuate-pinnatifid, to 10(15) x 3(5) cm; segments irregularly lobed and toothed, margin spiny. Corymbs terminal or in upper axils. Capitula many-flowered, separate, homogamous, bisexual, fertile, 4.5 cm wide. Involucre ovoid. Phyllaries several-seriate; outer ones spiny, spreading, 1.2 cm; inner ones dilated and incurved near apex, 1.5 cm. Receptacle 2 cm wide, flat; peduncle 1 cm. Florets to 2 cm. Corolla-tube 1.5 cm; lobes 5. Stamens 5; anther-base caudate, auricles connate, tails slender. Style arms short, obtuse. Achenes ovoid, obtusely 4-angled. Pappus of 15-40 whitish hairs to 1 cm, copious, feathery.
