Description:
Stems arborescent, up to 2 m tall, growing in humus rich soil, base not strongly swollen; barks thick with or without persistent cataphylls and leaf bases; petiole up to 70 cm long, glabrous, spinescent for 90 % of length. Leaves bright green, semi-glossy, up to 250 cm long, flat in section, up to 180 leaflets; newly emerging leaves bright green, tomentum shedding early; basal leaflets not gradually reducing to spines; median leaflets simple, up to 30 x 1 cm, 20 mm apart on rachis; section flat; margin flat, apex softly acuminate, not spinescent; midrib raised below. Cataphylls narrowly triangular, soft, thinly sericeus or lacking tomentum, up to 55 mm long. Pollen cones not seen. Megasporophylls 22.5-42 cm long, persistently brown tomentose; ovule 4-8, glabrous; lamina lanceolate, 55-60 x 20-30 mm, shortly dentate with lateral spines at margins; apical spines up to 12 mm long, 4-6 mm wide at base; seeds 30-40 x 30-35 mm, flattened-ovoid; sarcotesta yellow, fibrous layer absent; scierotesta smooth; spongy endotesta absent.
