Description:
Deciduous trees, up to 18 m high; spines present. Leaves alternate, spiral, ternate, stipulate; petiole 7-15 cm long; leaflet blade 7-20 x 7-12 cm wide, obovate or triangular, base truncate, margins entire, apex acuminate; blade glabrous. Flowers in racemes, predominantly red, very irregular, pedicellate or subsessile; pedicel to 5 mm long. Perianth 2 -whorled. Calyx to 15 mm long; lobes 5, all sepals joined. Petals 5, 5-6 cm long,some petals joined. Stamens 10, free of the perianth, both opposite and alternating with the corolla parts, coherent to each other (9 fused, 1 free). Ovary monomerous, superior, 1 -celled; ovules numerous; styles 1, simple. Fruit sterile.
