Description:
Stout, dense, undershrub with rounded crown. Leaves decussate, elliptic to broadly-ovate, to 20 x 10 cm, coriaceous, base cuneate, margin coarsely serrate, apex acuminate, strongly ribbed, glabrous except on veins below; petiole to 2.5 cm; stipule 0. Inflorescence of compact, hemispherical, terminal cymose clusters to 15 cm wide; sterile flowers peripheral to the inflorescence, with prominent calyx-lobes to 3.5 cm wide; fertile ones smaller, interior. Calyx-tube adnate to ovary; lobes 4 or 5, petaloid. Petals 4 or 5, obovate, 5 mm wide, valvate. Stamens 10, free. Ovary half-inferior, 2-5-celled; ovules numerous, on axile placentae; styles 2-5, stout. Capsule to 6 mm wide, 2-5-celled; seeds numerous.
