  Description: Much branched shrubs; branches 4-angled, armed with short thorns; young shoots shortly white hirsute. Leaves opposite or ternate, crenate, ovate, acute, base truncate or obtuse, serrate, scabrous above, puberulous below, to 6 x 4 cm; lateral nerves 5-7 pairs; petiole to 1.5 cm long. Flowers in capitate spikes, pink, up to 1cm long; bracts ovate- lanceolate, closely imbricate, persistent. Peduncle to 4 cm long, shortly prickly, heads 2.5 cm across. Calyx small, membranous, truncate or obscurely toothed. Corolla salver shaped, lobes 5, obscurely 2-lipped, lobes spreading, obtuse, yellow to orange-yellow, up to 1.2-1.5 cm long. Stamens 4, included. Ovary 2-celled; cells 1-ovuled; stigma oblong, lateral. Drupe bluish-black, globose, fleshy, enclosing two 1-seeded pyrenes, 3 mm across; seeds reticulate.
