Description:
Dioecious shrubs, 2-5 m tall, with milky sap. Leaves alternate, simple, 12-30 x 4-15 cm, ovate-acuminate or 3-lobed, sharply serrate, prominently veined from the base; stipules minute, caducous. Inflorescence of solitary, axillary, cylindrical spikes; peduncles 1-1.5 cm long, softly tomentose. Staminate spikes 2-3 cm long. Perianth-lobes 4, ovate, imbricate. Stamens 4; filaments inflexed in bud and spreading at anthesis; pistillode present. Pistillate spikes 1.5-2 cm long. Perianth-lobes 4, obovate, decussately imbricate, becoming fleshy in fruit. Ovary ovoid, 1-celled; ovule 1, pendulous; style single, branching towards the apex, stigmas divergent, white, feathery. Fruit an aggregate of drupelets enclosed in the accrescent, succulent perianth; seeds subglobose.
