  Description: Aquatic herbs, rhizomes erect, hispid, white inside. Leaves subpeltate, ovate-orbicular, obtuse or retuse, entire or sinuate-dentate and undulate along margins, 14-26 x 13-23 cm, dark shiny green above, pale green or purplish green with dark brown spots and patches beneath, glabrous, raised above water when crowded, cleft almost near to petiole base and with a woolly bulbil at the summit of petiole; basal lobes equal, almost overlapping towards base and then diverging, acuminate; sinus 5-11 cm long; veins ca. 19, raised beneath; petioles purplish green, glabrous. Flowers ca. 12 cm across, purple coloured, slightly fragrant. Receptacels glabrous; pedicels similar to petioles. Sepals spreading, ovate, acute and cucullate at apex, entire, ca. 4.5 x 2.5 cm, green with brownish red streaks outside, pale purple inside with green prominent veins, glabrous. Petals 20-25, in three rows, purple with prominent central vein; outer ones elliptic, obtusely cucullate, ca. 4.5 x 1.5 cm; inner ones lanceolate, acute, ca. 3.5 x 1 cm. Stamens 130-150, reflexed at the base of filament and anthers becoming erect forming a wide ring around the stigma or in aged flowers inner ones incurved; filaments of outer stamens 10-15 x 4-6 mm, yellow; that of inner stamens 2-4 x 1.5-2 mm, yellow; anthers 8-12 mm long, purple or inner ones yellow; sterile appendages up to 5 mm long, not prominent in inner ones, blue. Carpels 18-21; stigmatic surface broad, ca. 1.5 cm in diameter, flattened with a conical central core, yellow; stigmatic appendages oblong, yellow, erect but incurved after pollination. Seeds oblong-ellipsoid, ca. 1.0 x 0.5 mm, brown, longitudinal ridges dark brown, not papillate; transverse bands in a single row between ridges.
