Description:
Deciduous tree; branchlets glabrous. Leaves alternate, oblong-lanceolate, to 16 x 3 cm, chartaceous, base narrow, margin serrate-crenate, apex acuminate, crowded apically on branchlets; petiole 1.5 cm, with 2 glands near leaf-base; stipules subulate, glandular, deciduous. Flower solitary, in axils of fallen leaves, 3.5 cm wide, subsessile, appearing in advance of foliage. Calyx villous; lobes 5, spathulate, 3 x 5 mm. Petals 5, rose, obovate, 1.5 x 1 cm, margins wavy. Stamens c. 20, in 2 whorls, by the edge of calyx-tube; filaments of outer whorl 1.5 cm, those of the inner 1 cm. Ovary superior, hirsute outside; ovules 1 or 2, pendulous. Drupe ovoid, to 6 x 4.5 cm; exocarp hairy, mesocarp fleshy and endocarp bony, deeply pitted.
