Description:
Shrubs, to 1 m high; stems quadrangular, sulcate on two faces, hirsute, glabrous when old. Leaves opposite, ca 12 x 7 cm, variable, mostly elliptic-ovate, cuneate and decurrent at base, crenate-crenulate at margin, acuminate at apex, membranous, hirsute, lineolate on both surfaces; lateral nerves 7-10 pairs; petioles ca 5 cm long. Inflorescence panicles with compact spikes; spikes ovate, 2.5-5 cm long in flower, 5-8 cm long in fruit; peduncles glandular-hairy; bracts elliptic-ovate or elliptic-lanceolate, ca 1.3 cm long, decurrent at base, curled or flat at margin, obtuse or acute at apex, glandular-hairy; bracteoles linear, obtuse or acute, ca 1 cm long, ciliate, glandular-hairy. Calyx ca 1 cm long, lobed almost to base; tube ca 1 mm long; lobes 5, linear-lanceolate, equal, densely glandular-hairy in upper half, thinly so or glabrous in the lower. Corolla tubular-ventricose, ca 1.5 cm long, pale lilac; cylinder base shorter, ca 3 mm long; limb campanulate, ventricose, ca 1.2 cm long, hairy, 5-lobed; lobes triangular, obtuse. Stamens 4, included, didynamous; staminal sheath extending to 1/3 of campanulate portion, emarginate; both staminal sheath and filaments hairy; longer filaments arising from base of ventricose portion, ca 4 mm long; short filaments arising from top of sheath, ca 2 mm long; anthers dorsifixed, ca 1 mm long, white. Ovary on a prominent disc, ca 1.5 mm long, glandular-hairy above; style slender, ca 9 mm long, hairy. Capsules elliptic, ca 1 cm long, acute at apex; seeds 4, orbicular-obovate, ca 3 mm across, complanate, elastically hairy when wet, areole round, prominent, glabrous.
