Description:
Shrubs, to 1.5 m high; branches quadrangular, glandular-hairy when young; glabrescent when old. Leaves opposite, ca 14 x 8 cm, ovate-elliptic, equal in pairs, rounded or truncate at base and shortly decurrent on petiole, crenulate at margin, acute at apex, thickly membranous, uniformly and densely glandular-pubescent above, less so beneath, lineolate; lateral nerves 10-15 pairs, spreading and more prominent beneath; basal pair angled; petioles ca 5 cm long. Inflorescence terminal and axillary, in glandular-pubescent panicles; glands red and prominent; nodal bracts oblong, ca 3 mm long, calycine; floral bracts absent; bracteoles linear, ca 8 mm long, more glandular- hairy, shorter than calyx. Calyx 5-lobed; lobes divided nearly to base, narrowly oblong, obtuse, ca 1 cm long, less glandular- hairy. Corolla nearly straight, ca 2.5 cm; tube scarcely contracted at the base, deep violet or purple; ventricose portion glabrous outside, hairy inside with hairs in middle long, dense and retrose and hairs at base and below lobes soft and short; lobes short, rounded, emarginate, faintly veined, ca 5 mm long. Stamens 4, included; 2 middle ones shorter, hairy at base, ca 4 mm long; longer filaments ca 1 cm long, hairy; anther lobes equal. Ovary on a prominent disc; disc ca 1 mm long; ovary angular, ca 2.5 mm, glabrous; style linear, ca 1.8 cm long, slender, glabrous, included. Capsules ellipsoid, ca 1.8 cm long, pointed at apex, glabrous; seeds 2, triangular-ovate, ca 5 mm long, very thick, hairy, minutely areolate.
