Description:
Subshrubs, to 1.5 m high. Leaves opposite, ca 12 x 5 cm, often unequal, ovate to obovate, acute to attenuate at base, crenate-serrate at margin, acute to acuminate at apex, subcoriaceous, thinly scarbrous above and beneath, lineolate above; lateral nerves ca 6 pairs; petioles ca 6 cm long. Inflorescence in heads, 2-4 flowered, sometimes more and compound; peduncles ca 3 cm long, jointed, thickened upwards, sometimes faintly winged; bracts of head ovate, short-elliptic, crested, ca 8 mm; floral bracts slightly narrower, one at base of each flower, entire or crenulate-serrulate at margin, acute at apex, ciliate, faintly veined, ca 8 mm long; bracteoles 2, lanceolate, ca 8 x 2.5 mm, truncate at base, ciliate at margin, subacute at apex. Calyx 5-lobed; subequal, connate at base, ca 9 mm long, ciliate, strigose inside. Corolla ca 1 x 5 cm across, pink; tube ca 1 cm long, widening above from half way down; lobes 5, subequal, twisted to left in bud, reflexed, ca 5 mm, hirsute at base of the lobes and along grooves on either side of long stamens, obtuse. Stamens 4, attached at middle of tube, exserted; filaments thick, hispid from basal half, united in pairs, 6 and 7 mm long, decurrent; anther cell oblong , ca 2 mm. Ovary globose, ca 1.5 mm, glabrous; style filiform, ca 1.3 cm long, hairy; stigma acute. Capsules oblong-ellipsoid, ca 1.2 cm long, glabrous, excluded; seeds 4, ovoid, faintly beaked at tip, 2 small, appressed-hairy; areole small, semicircular, glabrous.
