  Description: Leafy shoots to 2 m. Leaves distichous, blades lanceolate, to 50 x 8 cm, base cuneate, apex acute, margin pubescent; sheath tubular below, imbricating; ligule to 1 cm, rigid, hairy. Inflorescence unbranched, drooping, to 20 cm, axis stout, densely pubescent, bearing c. 20 cincinni of 2 flowers each. Bracts 0; pedicel 0.5 cm; bracteoles to 2.8 cm, white, open to base. Calyx 2 cm, glabrous, 3-lobed. Corolla tube shorter than calyx, side-lobes white, 2.8 x 1 cm, dorsal one broader, lip 3.6 x 2 m, crimson with yellow margins and base. Stamen 1; filament short; anther included; staminodes 0.8 cm. Ovary 3-celled; ovules numerous, on axile placentae; epigynous glands 5. Capsule subglobose, 3 x 2.5 cm; seeds numerous.
