Description:
Annual herbs; culms 10-30 cm high, slender, erect, tufted, nodes, glabrous, internode 0.5-3 cm long. Leaves lanceolate. 0.5-3 x 0.2-0.5 cm, acuminate, hairy on both dorsal and ventral surface, base rounded, margin ciliate. Ligule membranous, lacerate. Leaf sheaths 0.5-2.5 cm long, compressed, glabrous towards base, hairy towards apex. Racemes solitary or closely paired, 1-3 cm long. Joints shorter than the spikelets brown hairs. Spikelets two types,basal 2-4 spikelets very shortly -awned and upper ones awned, yellow to brown with red bands at the tip. Shortly awned spikelets 3-4 mm long. lanceolate, brownish. Florets 2, both male or one barren. Lower glume lanceolate, 3-4 x 1-2 mm, subcoriaceous, 5-nerved, ciliolate, hairy on dorsal side, with a narrow red band at the top. Upper glume oblanceoloate, 3-4 x 1-2 mm, 3-nerved, chartaceous. First lemma oblong, ca 3 x 1 mm, apex ciliolate, nerveless. First palea oblanceolate, 2-3 x 1 mm, delicate, margin inflexed. Second lemma lanceolate, 3 x 0.5 -1 mm, 3-nerved, apex ciliolate, and with short awn of 0.25-1 mm long. Second palea oblanceolate, 2-keeled, margin inflexed. Awned spikelets oblanceolate, yellow to brown, 3-4 mm long. Florets 2, lower male or barren and upper bisexual. First glume obovate-oblong, 3-4 x 1-2 mm, 7-nerved, subcoriaceous, ciliolate at apex, softly hairy on dorsal side, nerves not reaching the apex, with a narrow red band at the tip. Upper glume oblong-lanceolate, 3-4 x 1-1.5 mm, chartaceous, ciliolate at apex, 3-nerved, 2-keeled. First lemma ovate-oblong, 3.4 x 1 mm, truncate at apex, delicate, hyaline, membranous, nerveless. First palea lanceolate, 3.5-4 x 1 mm, delicate, hyaline. Second lemma linear, 3-4 x 0.5 mm, awned, awn 7-15 mm, column 5-7 mm long, hairy. Second palea ovate, 1.5-2 x 1 mm, fimbriate at apex, delicate, hyaline, faintly nerved. Stamens 2, anthers ca 2 mm long, reddish. Ovary oblong, ca 0.5-1 mm long, styles 2, ca 1 mm long, stigma 1-3 mm long, reddish brown. Grain oblong.
