Description:
Small to medium-sized trees reaching 10 - 12 m in height; trunk short. Leaves alternate, pinnate; leaflets 3 - 4 pairs, ovate or elliptic, slightly asymmetric, 1.5 -5 x 1-2.5 cm, basal pairs smaller and the larger ones at the tip. Flowers small inconspicuous star-shaped, about 1cm in size and occur in terminal 15 - 25 cm long panicles. Sepals 4, yellowish-green, slightly larger than petals, tomentose. Petals 4, red, small. Stamens 8; anthers orange or red in colour. Fruits ca 2 - 3 cm long, 2 or 3-lobed, unripe fruits yellowish-green in colour, when ripe they turn to pink red to brown and split open into three parts; seeds rounded, 4-5 mm across, black, tomentose.
