Description:
Small straggling bamboo, culms erect, up to 3 m height, yellowish green, 1.6- 2.2 cm in diameter, slightly rough, hollow, wall thickness 2-2.5 mm, nodes prominent and swollen; internode 45-65 cm long; culm sheath persistent, ovate 12-18 cm long, thin, striate, hairy when young, wrinkled, inside shiny, smooth; auricles ciliate, blade narrow, linear lanceolate. Leaves alternate, linear lanceolate, 22-30 x 2.5-3.8 cm, acuminate at apex, base truncate, margin serrulate towards base mid-vein prominent, secondary veins 8-10 pairs, distinct; petiole up to 6 mm long, at length abscissile at the level of insertion of the petiole on the sheath; inner ligule a hard stramineous rim up to 2 mm long with a ciliolate margin, outer ligule alike but shorter, auricle with aural setae up to 1.2 cm long, leaf sheath hard stramineous with bulbous based hairs when young. Inflorescence of pseudospikelets forming aggregations at the terminal or leafy axis. Spikelets ovate-lanceolate, glabrous, dark purplish-green in colour, 2-2.4 x 0.4-0.6 cm, bracts ovate, 0.5-0.7 x 0.5-0.8 cm, sterile glumes 3, 1.4-1.6 x 0.5-0.7 cm,1.8-2 x 0.6-0.7 cm, 2.2-2.4 x 0.7-0.8 cm respectively, many veined, glabrous, margin ciliate towards the apex, tip mucronate with ciliated appearance on the base of the mucronatum; lemma membranous towards base, apex acuminate, tip firm, 2-2.2 x 0.8-1 cm. glabrous, up to 36 veined with transverse veinlets; palea membranous, 1.4-1.5 x 0.6-0.7 cm, acute, with a prominent notch at the apex, lobes unequal, ciliate up to 25 nerved, without transverse veinlets. Lodicules 4, membranous throughout, lanceolate, with slight pinkish tinge at the apex, one entire, 6 x 1 mm, others with sub-divided apex measuring, 7 x 3 mm, 8 x 3 mm, 8 x 3 mm respectively, 2-6 nerved. Stamens up to 56, anther lobes yellow with slight greenish to purplish-yellow tinge, lobes equal, up to 9 mm long, filaments free, filiform, basifixed. Ovary glabrous, rounded and smooth at base, gradually narrowed to a cylindrical style; style subdivided into 7 plumose stigma, subequal. Caryopsis large light green with a purplish tinge, 8.5-9.5 x 1.6-2 cm; beak tapering, 4-5.5 cm long, basal part of the beak is swollen and purplish-green in colour.
